Comments on song "Ashai Mugam"

With all due respect Sir, I never knew you are a senior citizen, and I
would never expect such an answer from a person like you. As a senior
citizen I expect you are age of more than 60. You were born at the time of
India independence (the unification of India), and you are still not
independent from the language barriers at least (Or at most) in the case of
Music. You might have studied and worked at all the "districts"(even though
the fact remains when they have formed, may be you were at the

The poem was written in Tamil not Brahmin Tamil, so it is indeed a
mispronunciation.
nithyakanna ram on April 26, 2013
tamil is older than sanskrit. go figure which was derived from which...
staysafeable on April 27, 2013
Yeah, I am a Northern Indian myself but I agree. Tamil is older than
Sanskrit as Sanskrit is just a polished Prakrittam (subject's language).

No... I can't give wrong doings a break. No one is stereo typing them. they
are living it. Bharathi would have never approved of it. How much effort
does it take to correct the prenounciation? This is a vulgar display of
what is caste chauvinism. It's unfortunate that education and even arts
cannot mellow down people's minds. And pity you for justifying it.
Bharadwaaj Sridhar on May 03, 2013
Blame it on their teacher!

this

Nesham.Ashai..they are not tamil words.. I believe this is composed by
Mahakavi Subramaniya Barathi in tamil. I have great regards for
shankarTucker. But this is not having jeevan in vocals. The
important/significant quality of classical music is the Gamakam. Its like
heart of Indian Music. The vocals lack feel, bhava and gamaka. There is
something called sound sense beauty. The rasam/feel you give for the song
should match the lyric. They split nen ..jam.
Ravikumar V on May 18, 2013
More importantly, Singing in sruthi and laya doesn't end the responsibility
of musician. There is much more than that. Musicians should take more
responsibility of knowing what they sing, lyrics, meaning etc before they
sing. These are great compositions which should be sung with utmost clarity
and purity. I am not finding fault with the vocalist. They have got nice
voice and great talent. But at the end of the day, they miss the basic
stuffs. Sometimes, we need to keep up the tradition.

Would love if you could create something that would be beautiful for
Bharatanatyam or Kathak! Your music is simply beautiful.

this is the best type of intoxication...
thodilover on June 01, 2013
beautiful music! But it is NOT 'ashai' ...it is asai!!
thodilover on June 12, 2013
What the heck does it mean? What are you trying to tell me? What is cross
belt?
thodilover on June 18, 2013
So? must you bring in your caste-biased views here? What has brahmin got to
do with this? Is it because these girls are Brahmins? So what? You guys
have your minds in the gutter and every opportunity you get, you have to
bad-mouth your own Tamilians - whether they are Brahmins, Mudaliar,
Chettiar, Goundar, Nadar or Thevar ... we all are Tamils first.
thodilover on June 18, 2013
You are wrong; Brahmin Tamil Dialect doesn't pronounce 'Asai' as 'Ashai'. I
noticed that of late in Chennai, people talk like this and it looks like it
is a fad. Besides, these two girls were brought up in the USA and naturally
they don't know how to speak proper Tamil.
thodilover on June 19, 2013
Ivan Jolly - I am not ARGUING man! This song was composed by one of the
greatest Tamil Poets, Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati. I love the fusion and
Shankar Tucker and the girls have done an outstanding job of putting this
together. However, I still say the pronunciation of certain words were
wrong. Anyway, let us let it go at that.

Please do not insult American born/raised Tamilians. I'm 25 female, have
learned carnatic music + bharatnatyum all my life and can both speak, read
and write tamil. We have SunTV running in our house all day, for heavens
sake. These particular singers did not pronounce the words correctly and
should have done better research before singing such a piece.
hrmani1 on June 22, 2013
I also feel like Tamilians in India do more harm to the language than we do
here. We talk and love our mother tongue while many of the youngsters in
India think it's cooler to pretend to not know the language. And I don't
just speak for myself but rather the larger group of young Tamil friends
that I have here. So please do not insult all of us and please pick your
words better
Star Fawks on June 23, 2013
I actually did like it. It's very peaceful.
thodilover on June 25, 2013
I wasn't pontificating, man! I was so used to Brahmins being slammed and
bad-mouthed by the Dravidian parties, I thought you were one of them. No
problem, peace bro!
Samuel Morse on June 27, 2013
enchanting.. totally feelin it. U feel me?
cluelessnobody on June 30, 2013
And how is their pronunciation bad here? They have pronounced every letter
exactly as it was in Bharathi's original rendition. If you should blame
somebody, you should only blame Bharathi.

This's also one of prominent Tamil Accents. Just because it happens to be
spoken by the most hated, ridiculed, oppressed group of people in the
state, may not make it "Wrong-Pronunciation"
