This movie is based on a novel written in early 20th century. In those
times, marriage didn't just unite two people, it was a bond between two
families. Parents arranged marriages. Most of the marriages worked, some
did not. Where as these days, only some marriages work, most don't.

back in those days peple never really knew the meaning of love only
parental love, couples failed to understand each other becuase marriage was
never about them, they stayed together because they thought it was right
because society said so, nowadays marriages dont work because people fall
out of love or it just doesn't work, why should you spend so much time with

Of course it matters what your parents think. In Indian culture, respecting
your elders and having respect for family is very important. I don't expect
you to understand since you're probably not raised with those morals but
it's cultural differences so yeah.

Of course a parents' blessing is tremendously important in marriage - but
this story is just based on the fact that very often parents settled their
children's marriages not really thinking about the children's good, but
rather concentrating on their own petty ambitions, offences,etc.Both Dev
and Paro were practically victims to their mothers' quarrels and hurt
feelings. And this is what makes the story so tragic-but in the end they
broke free from all of it through death.Beautiful story.

I understand what you mean. I don't think it is right for parents to
disregard their children's happiness like this. Their children's happiness
should be their own happiness and ambition but unfortunately some parents
don't see that and that does not mean they aren't worth their children's
love. Parents do what they think is right for their kids... but they make
mistakes too. Dev's mother realized her mistake eventually but it was too
late as Paro was already married.

Well, of course you have to love your parents no matter what!!! And Paro
did a great thing paying respects to Dev's father on his deathbed... For
me, this film is full of heartbreaking sad scenes that also bring out the
dignity of the charachters in a lovely way - like Dev leading Paro to her
bridal palankin, her sticking out the hand with the lantern out of the
palanquin, Paro and Chandramukhi dancing together... The triumph of human
nobility in moments of dreadful misfortune

Yes, it was a very high minded thing to do from her part to pay respect to

Bravo to films back in the 90's! Their talents gleamed effortlessly. The
Indian culture was portrayed and shared with the world as an embellishment
to this world. And now, Bollywood films are filmed with actors and
actresses with no acting skills whatsoever. And now the Bollywood films
might as well be Hollywood because they have incorporated so much
Westernization into the industry. Makes me disappointed. I'm not Indian but
Bollywood films used to mean so much to me.

Now, THIS is true dance. Madhuri's expressions are to die for! She'll
always be remembered for her amazing work, especially when it comes to
classical dancing. What Katrina Kaif does in her item numbers could never
compare to a real, genuine performance like this. I have absolutely no idea
how some people worship Katrina, for the love of God!!!! She barely does
anything in her movies!

I totally agree. I hate how Western culture has rubbed off onto Indian
cinema. Bollywood was beautiful as it was with films such as Devdas and
