these movies grand? And crazy? Encountering them as an American who's never
seen any of this stuff before, it's not only amazing, but amusing too.

i think you mean "bollywood/hollywood", but yes, probably. movies like that - movies that try to crossover from indian culture to american culture (in an attempt to appeal to members of the Indian diaspora) - often use old/current Bollywood songs as referential points. Indian-Americans and immigrants often recognize these songs right away, whereas non-Indian viewers usually assume that they are simple a part of the film. (See, e.g. "Chunari Chunari" in Monsoon Wedding)
