People, stop comparing! Rafi seems to sing it in a more sophisticated way
because Shashi Kapoor is an educated city guy. Kishore seems to sing it in
a more free and rustic manner to match Bharat Bhushan's character in the
movie. Rafi & KK weren't supposed to sing it exactly like each other,
because the characters/personality of the actors in the movie aren't the
same!

Besides, just because one singer appears to sing it better than the other
doesn't mean they are better. Some songs are suited to specific singers.

frankly Kishores voice is a ringing freshness and not a straineous lengthy sometimes annoying ragas . Apart from that he was a great actor,comedian,character actor,lyricist,writters,music composer..wow !!! endless achievements. Such personalities are rare.

one thing u all must agree with is that Rafi's voice is more melodious than

It's only a matter of opinion and perception. There's no way of comparing

Wow! Glad to see and read so many Kishore fans abandon their usual shyness
and hesitance, and speak up loudly and decisively in Kishore's favor - well
done brothers and sisters! Overall, and in the song in particular, Kishore
was just on another level both in terms of voice quality and musical

To suggest that Kishore was only about "yodeling" and nothing more
demonstrates a complete lack of musical knowledge. The basic difference
between Kishore and Rafi was that Kishore had a purer tone and better voice
quality. Rafi may have been technically trained with harkats and aakars,
but that only made his singing sound needlessly complicated. What Rafi
would say in 10 notes, Kishore would say better in 3.

@pistachioguy WHAAT? Rafi's voice by all accounts was 'purer' than
Kishore's ever was. In musical terms Rafi's voice is nearer a 'sine'
waveform whereas Kishore's is more 'jagged tooth' (can't remember precise
term at this moment). The 'sine' is the smoother of the two. As for 'better
voice'...this is comment is purely subjective ie depends on the person
listening to it.

Just checked- nowhere is it mentioned that the human voice is in "sine
wave" form- in fact, the human voice is regarded as an aggregate and
composite of several waves due to overtones and natural harmonics- nothing
in fact is in pure sine wave - not amplitude, nor frequency- in fact,
numerical analysis of voice synthesis is fraught with error- here's a
worthwhile citation- "Sine-wave speech is an intelligible synthetic
acoustic signal composed of three or four time-varying sinusoids" Remez, '81

Let me reiterate, since Indians have a habit of throwing about sloppy
knowledge in place of true scholarship - pulse analysis details the various
periodic wave formations; they are 1)sine, 2) square, 3)triangle, and 4)
sawtooth waves (not "jagged tooth") due to compression and rarefaction.
Sine exists only in the absence of harmonics eg tuning fork - speech
contains overtones and harmonics. Volume, Frequency,and Timber distinguish
voice. In fact sawtooth timber includes every integer harmonic.

@wtc175 - the only reason I am disinclined to say more on this topic is
because it is evident you obviously know music, and good music at that.
Your preference for musical acts as detailed in the Youtube comment history
section is most interesting and intriguing - Camel, Tangerine Dream, Gerry
and the Pacemakers, all bands I haven't listened to in ages - however they
are most certainly worthy musical acts that only people with sound musical
discrimination even know about or can comment upon.

@pistachioguy Not humbug . Scientific. Viewed through an oscilloscope you
can see the difference between a 'smooth voice' and a 'rough' voice. I am
not saying one is better or more pleasing than the other - but one can be
analysed as being 'purer' than the other. which is why Kishore's voice has
an 'edge' -ie grating whereas Rafi's is 'purer' . ADSR waveform dictates
how sound behaves ie 'Attack Decay Sustain Release' This is an OBJECTIVE
not SUBJECTIVE analysis. Thanks for your comments.

@pistachioguy Depends on my mood...but I think I prefer Kishore's version
more than Rafi's here - but there is a 'sad version of this song by Rafi
(piano start) - the music being completely different to the happy Rafi
version. Check it out..wonderful!

@wtc175 - I remember the sad version, and just listened to it - the trouble
with Rafi is, very few composers knew how to write proper music for him,
except Naushad - the peak of Rafi is achieved in Baiju Bawra (Man Tadpat
and Duniya Ke Rakhwale), along with songs like Khoya, Khoya Chanda and
Chaudhvi ka Chand, where his soft upper register is well exploited. Most of
the time Rafi end up sounding like a yell or shout. Very jarring. Kishore
may have lacked technique, but was much more musical.

@pistachioguy - In plain fact, the smoothest and softest voice ought
properly to belong to Manna Dey, who for all practical purposes was light
years ahead of Rafi or anybody else - songs like Bhay Bhanjana and Sur na
Saje from Basant Bahar are impossible to sing with quite the degree of
finess Manna da brought to bear on them. Technically he was superior to
everyone else in voice quality, technique, and range. Others like Talat and
Hemant had their moments - but Kishore sets a very high bar.

by imitating KL Saigal note for note, in 'Marne ki Duaen" - and most
everyone will agree Saigal is unbeatable in terms of sheer range, voice
culture, and timber. The fact that Kishore could (and did, when the
occasion demanded it) sing Saigal note-perfect, itself demonstrates the
startling technical command behind his deceptively facile and simple vocal
style. Kishore believed in minimal but effective meends, unlike Rafi.

There are three versions. Two versions were sung by Rafi, Happy and sad. I
was referring to the sad one, which starts with an intro “ Mere Nazarme tho
Sirfu Thum ho” , where Shashi Kapor sings while playing piano. Rafi’s intro
is superb.
